Parents for Children's Mental Health Co-Authors: A Family Engagement Training Strategy Theresa Dostaler and Sarah Cannon Family engagement training Meaningful family engagement can improve child and youth mental health outcomes, but sometimes it’s hard to do it well. Community mental health organizations vary in how they involve families at all levels of their work – agency, program and service provider. The Ontario Provincial Centre of Excellence for Child and Youth Mental Health recognizes that effective family engagement can be a challenge, but believe the tremendous opportunities for stronger care are worth the effort. That’s why they are working with parents and service providers to develop a family engagement training program that is collaborative, practical and responsive to the unique needs of both child and youth mental health agencies and the people they serve. To ensure that the family engagement training strategy is grounded in the best available evidence, the Centre teamed up with service providers and parents across the province to review the literature, scan the practice landscape and consult with families. |

Presentations to Mental Health Select Committee Select Committee on Mental Health and Addictions hears from mental health consumer and family groups The Legislative Assembly of Ontario’s Select Committee on Mental Health and Addictions heard from a number of mental health consumer and family groups in Southwestern Ontario on the need for a recovery-oriented system of care that would provide seamless service delivery to meet their medical and socio-economic needs. A reformed system of care would include increased funding for consumer-run groups, inclusion of peer support workers in hospital emergency rooms, and improved access and funding for ODSP, housing, employment and training needs. This approach would also involve family members as partners in the decision-making and information gathering aspects of service delivery.
